Henry Luce and I

Painting of Yangtze River Thank you so much, Henry Luce! I always treasure your beautiful gift to Taichung, and I can feel your gentle love. Because of your love toward China, a marvelous university like Donghai Eastern Sea University came about. In my opinion, perhaps because of my bias that I can’t help, as it is my birthplace, it is the most idyllic campus in the world. I came to know this great architect today in World Journal’s art display by Donghai University architect designer, Mr. Cheng Qi Kuan. Cheng, the designer of the campus and founder of the architecture department, internalized Chinese philosophy, aesthetics, which were passed on to me in Dong Hai University campus. A full course design on the wide acreage campus in the woods Classic expression abounds Leading to tranquil section With ultra modern dormitory Pulsating the science mythic wonders Who can express the western Church of the ultimate power Than I. M. Pei To exalt the mind A rare art wonder layout masterminded by great architects Filled in their hearts of passion of culture Interwoven in our psyche For years, I have been wondering how such a dream campus came about. Then I found the answer today, from the architect Dr. Chen Qi Kuan, and his life and temperament depicted an artistic abode’s life filled with spiritual dance in the tapestry. I have never been to Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, but I experienced it in its pure form when I visited Donghai University campus in my childhood. Off the woods The Literature Department, an arc leading to the courtyard A pair of white butterflies dancing in front of the powdered wall in the garden But it is just like ancient feeling of Tang Dynasty Chinese classic is still in the air Art designed brick with Chinese pattern Luce’s sister donated the fund, and Dr. I. M. Pei designed the church, and Dr. Chen Qi Kuan designed the campus. Mingled Art with life. A lost wonder world. A Tang Dynasty court yard for Literature wing from sheep intestine alley leading to. A pair of Butterflies flying with powdered wall. Newest modern dormitory. You created such a haute and exalt humanity art and science aesthetic environment in Taichung, Taiwan. It is like utopian, with ancient court yard and art nouveau. Because of you, so many dull minds were lifted to be in touch with graceful worlds. The original campus designing was requested by I. M. Pei to Dr. Chen Qi Kuan. My vibrant dream and romance breathed there. I talked to Doolittle’s old pilots and they told me how Nationalists in Jiangxi Province helped them. How the hungry guerrillas escorted the lost soldiers. How Nationalists gave America rare minerals, and the U.S. ordered China not to demand any redemption from Japan to help out with China's rebuilding after the war.

I don't understand the government's cruelty toward China, but I like the private individuals' kindness.

General Wedemeyer didn’t despise the inner land Chinese, but understanding and sympathetic. China gave America so much, and very nice Americans as our loyal friends, like Henry Luce, Wedemeyer, and many many more, make me feel great hope in America and my dream of China is so beautiful still ever.
